Chemistry to Burn
The title tells you the plot (she's in witness protection, he's her protector) and the fact that this is a Harlequin Intrigue says you're in for romantic suspense, a difficult genre to write well. Life and death situations fan the flame of love, because when there's danger, and someone might die, we really understand that love is all that matters in this life. However, if an author can't balance the romance and suspense, the story feels forced. Barb Han pulls the pacing off brilliantly with Sadie and Nick, whose love feels as real as the danger they face at every turn. As in all great reads, it's the characters who make it work for me, and these two have chemistry to burn. But Han makes us wait for it, slowly building the tension between these two as they work together to survive, and maybe to win the ultimate prize--true love. The bad guys are formidable, but they are no match for Sadie and Nick. Read more
