Localized corrosion, including stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue, is the major source of corrosion-related failures in industry. However, the ability to predict failure in service is constrained in many cases by a lack of understanding and detailed knowledge of electrochemical processes occurring within localized-corrosion cavities. A range of experimental techniques and mathematical modelling methods have been developed to characterise the unique micro-environment formed within the restricted geometry of a cavity. This book brings together papers presented at a conference held at the National Physical Laboratory in 1984 to discuss electrochemistry in cavities and improve understanding of localized corrosion and environment-assisted failure.
