Set in the Border country where the Cheviots and Lammermuirs meet, this book tells of the Gow family, now almost extinct but for the fragile, stubborn Jane, her grandfather Walter Gow and her miserly old grand-aunt Janet. Both the old people are anxious that Jane should marry a Walter Gow of another branch, but Jane cannot forget her childhood sweetheart, Keith. Everything seems to go wrong for Jane, but she battles on through laughter and tears to an enchanting finish.
