In her latest book, “The Carnivore Way” Dr. Eisenberg engages the reader with scientific acumen and personal stories in an easy to comprehend way. Layperson and scientist alike, will garner a better understanding of these creatures’ needs and how we can adjust policy to better live with them. She informs the reader how these keystone species help create and maintain healthier, more diverse, and resilient ecosystems. “The Carnivore Way” demonstrates the importance of connective corridors to allow wide ranging wildlife the ability to disperse across/around our formidable human barriers so they can survive in an increasingly fragmented world. Like Aldo Leopold, Dr. Eisenberg also explores the ethical obligations we need to consider regarding how we live with, and manage, wildlife. “The Carnivore Way” helps the reader unfamiliar with these species and their effects on ecosystems, to have a better understanding of, and acceptance for, these charismatic carnivores. Her book moves us toward a day when more people will choose to coexist with large carnivores instead of viewing them as adversaries or competitors. Living with large carnivores requires awareness, effort, and restraint on our part. It’s not always easy, but it can be done. This book helps enlighten the reader about carnivores and the habitats they use, while avoiding the sensationalism of media portrayals of these animals. Ultimately it is our responsibility in the Anthropocene to be as well informed as possible about the consequences of our ecological choices. Dr. Eisenberg provides us with grist for the mill to inform us with science; but also with heart. This book is a must read ! I enjoyed it very much. Read more
