Growing up, Rachel's salvation is their maid Adelle's belief in her strengths, and her deep, life-long friendship with Jestine, Adelle's daughter. But Rachel's life is not her own. She is married off to a widower with three children to save her father's business. When her husband dies suddenly and his handsome, much younger nephew, Frédérick, arrives from France to settle the estate, Rachel seizes her own life story, beginning a defiant, passionate love affair that sparks a scandal that affects all of her family, including her favorite son, who will become one of the greatest artists of France.

Building on the triumphs of The Dovekeepers and The Museum of Extraordinary Things, set in a world of almost unimaginable beauty, The Marriage of Opposites showcases the beloved, bestselling Alice Hoffman at the height of her considerable powers. GREAT READ

I really liked this book. As usual Alice Hoffman write an excellent story filled with magic, fantasy brilliant colors and wonderful characters as well as reality. She excels in intimate details and strong description. This story highlights harsh island life mixed with fantastic and bright surroundings, mostly seen through the eyes of a rebellious girl, dreaming of Paris, growing to adulthood and the realities of life as a wife and mother. The other island inhabitants are just as brilliantly brought to life in their own stories and events. There is not a single book written by this author that I disliked. You can hardly go wrong in reading her unique tales and fascinating prose. Her pen is a paintbrush of unimagined colors and strokes. I strongly recommend anything and everything she has written. She and Stephen King, though so very different, continue to be among the best writers out there. Read more
